Our Activites

The South Woden UC community is active in many different areas and always welcomes new ideas for involvement in the local area or further afield. In the following pages, you will find details of some of the current groups and activities. In summary, in addition to our Sunday worship, our activities are:

Carols under the Stars

DSCN4254In conjunction with a Canberra based community choir – The Gospel Folk – we conduct the annual Carols under the Stars at our local suburban shopping centre. The event is always well attended by several hundred people from the local community. It is a very friendly, family oriented occasion with a simple Christmas message of love tolerance and inclusiveness. Other musical groups, a guest singer and a local primary school choir also participate. A collection is taken for the Christmas Bowl appeal. This is an outreach activity.

Christmas Church Service

A special well attended church service for children, families and friends is held shortly after the Carols under the Stars. This is a highly participatory service involving the children and their parents. People from the carols service are invited to attend. It is in addition to the normal services of Advent and Christmas. This is an outreach activity.

Ash Wednesday

We have a special Ash Wednesday morning service of meditation and reflection in the garden of one of our members. The service is a time of contemplation, reflection, and ritual as we mark each other on the forehead with the sign of the cross. The service is followed by breakfast. We invite members of nearby Uniting Churches as well. There is usually an attendance of 15-20. This is a spiritual growth activity.

Study Groups

We have adult study groups at various times during the year. In the last year studies have looked at the prophet Amos and the work of John Cassin (2nd century theologian). Lenten studies included a creative response group looking at John’s gospel and a group looking at the spiritual themes of St Matthew’s gospel. These groups have been well attended. These are spiritual growth activities.

Craft Group

We have a monthly craft group attended by about 12-15 people. The group has made table runners for the worship table and cushions for children as well as selling a wide range of craft items at craft fairs in nearby Uniting churches. The group raised about $2000 last year. This is a fellowship and fundraising activity. There is more information on other pages.

Phoenix Knitters

We also have Phoenix Knitters. This group meets over winter with an average attendance of 15-20 including church members and people from the wider community. The knitted products are donated to various charities in Canberra and overseas. 279 garments were made last year. This is an outreach and fellowship activity. There is more information on other pages.

Christmas CakesIMG_2016

Can we make Christmas cakes – Yes we can! Members of the congregation have raised over $115,000 in the last ten years making Christmas cakes for sale. Many people are involved in different ways in the production and selling of hundreds of cakes. Almost all the profit (about $12,000 last year) is used for wider work projects in the local community, Australia and overseas. A lot of thought goes into how the money is used. This is a fund raising and good companionship activity.

Third Sunday Speakers

Third Sunday speakers after church – these sessions after worship are designed so a church members can tell us about the work they do professionally or in the community. or discuss some aspects of their life and spiritual journey. The sessions are not held every third Sunday but are well attended. These sessions are educational and affirm the Christian commitment of our members in their day to day lives.

Nature Walks

Guided nature walks are held 3-4 times a year after church. The walks are led by two experienced bush walkers. This is a family social activity the walk being followed by lunch. This is a fellowship and out reach activity.

Picnics and Family Lunches

The congregation has occasional picnics and lunches during the year. These are usually well attended. These are fellowship and outreach activities.

Like most congregations, South Woden can turn on a splendid morning tea at short notice and does so on special occasions such as baptisms, farewells, special services or for no particular reason at all!   These are fellowship and hospitality activities.
